Staying Healthy by Washing Your Hands

Listen to MP3

summary:
Hand washing with soap is very important, because it is the most effective ways to reduce infectious disease. Touch eyes, nose or mouth are all infective ways. There are two easier ways to become sick. One is touch eyes or nose after someone elas who has coughed nearby you. Another one is that someone cooks for you without clean hands. The author shows the time we should wash hands, such as before and after preparing food, before eating and after using the toilet, and after handling animals or a baby or money. Whatever kinds of soap you choose, the most effective way is rub all areas of the hands.

opinion:
We should wash hands frequently everyday. When I was working in the hospital, I had to wash my hands before and after doing anything. It is not only good for myself, but also helpful for my patients. Actually everyone knows how to wash hands, but some of them are lazy. They just rinse their hands without soap, or they think soap is harmful for our hands because of chemical. I think they can change their habit or change their soap. There has another kind of soap without chemical, and it is really good for our hands. To sum up, hand washing is really important for us to keep health.

family

Today I have two stories.
They happened two years ago, when I was working in the hospital as a nursing student, I met two old lady. Their common characters were old and sick. One of them was rich, another one was poor. Later both of them were died.

The rich lady had a big family. Everyday all of her children and grandchildren came to visit her, and they always made the wall dirty and noisy. Those children or grandchildren always tried to talk to her. So it was easy to say that she's very happy. Was it true? I'm sorry to say no. I never saw her smile. Later I found a chance and talked with her, then I knew the truth. She had a large sum of inheritance after she passed away. All of her children and grandchildren wanted to get it, that's why they came to the wall everyday, and poured out their complaints before her, which made her worried a lot about her children and angryed that they could't help each other. She's unhappiness. At last, she donated all money to the Red Cross and passed away.

The poor lady had two children and one grandchild. They came to visit her one by one because they needed to work and hadn't got lots of time to stay with her. However, she's always happy. When her grandchild came, she sang songs or talked stories to her. When her children came, they brought her favourit food to her. She never felt lonely even she hadn't got many inheritance to them. After a few months, she passed away. Her family said they were sad without regret because she was the happiest lady in the world.

If you have chance, which kind of family will you want to have?

Studying Nursing at Alverno College Paves Way for Helping Community Back Home
Listen to Profile of Margaret Wambui
By Marsha James
June 07, 2007

summary:
Sister Margaret Wambui is studying at Alverno College in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She's from Kenya East Africa. She worked for HIV AIDS before she went to Wisconsin, but suddenly she got the idea that her knowledge about nursing was not enough for her to answer patients' questions so that she went to Alverno College for educating. Her major is nursing, and she likes this college very much. The most important reason is that she gets a broader view of nursing from that college. She learns everything about nursing, even the basic knowledge like what is nursing and what is expected of a nurse. She figures that she will be able to deal with different kinds of problems that patients have after she finishes her study and goes back home. She will proud not only to have education as a woman but also to educate others who don't know anything about it.

opinion:
After reading this news, I really feel happy that there has a new lady wants to be a nurse. To be a nurse is not a easy thing. We need to study more and more knowledge so that we can treat and educate our patients correctly. Once you can't answer patient's question, he won't believe you any more because he thinks you are not professional. On the other hand, as a nurse, we should know what we are and what we will be in the future. We should have faith in our ability and have responsibilities for our work. As long as we have the ability to help others, we will feel very proud to be a useful women.

My Story

Today my story is about death.
It was happened when I practised as a nursing student in the hospital during 2006.
One day, there was a emergency. A young man was hurted by knives everywhere. He's bleeding a lot and almost dying. This was the first time I saw a man with pallid face and unconscious, I even didn't know how to take care of him. I thought he had some consciousness, yet he couldn't answer me, so I kept talking to him and tried to wake him up. When he's bleeding, I tried to stop it. When he's clonus, I tried to protect him from being hurt again. I spent my whole day for him, unfortunately, he died at night.
I felt sorry for him all the time. He looked so young that he must have some important things to do. His parents brought him up, but he died before he responded to them. What caused his death? Fight. Because of fighting, he lost his life. It sounded unbelievable. Life is such an important thing that many people want to hold it, however he lost it quickly.
Now I just want to tell you that life is a really wonderful thing. Without it, you can't do anything. Whenever and whatever you meet, even it is very difficult and hard, just try it, don't give up. Even you lose everything, you're still alive so that you always have chances to do it again. Please respect and protect your life and make it more beautiful, you will get your responses in the future.

African Health Officials Cautiously Welcome G8 Health Pledge
Listen to Tran report
By Phuong Tran
Dakar
June 08,2007

summary:
Leaders of the world's richest countries pledged $60 billion in the coming years to fight AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis in Africa. There are some health problems in Africa, such as drugs, equipment, laboratories and new health workers. These aid money tackle major diseases on the continent, but how to manage them remains a problem. A director at the World Health Organization's regional office for Africa in Congo said that some of these aid money should be used not only to manage those funds, but also to ensure that people has access to care. On the other hand, the director of the National AIDS Council of Senegal hoped G8 leaders could honor the pledge for health aid. Without these funds, it will be difficult to fund prevention activities. On the contrary, Africans will work to manage the increased aid.

opinion:
In my point of view, I always think Africa is a poor country. These money is really useful for them. Actually, here is a huge amount of money. Maybe it is not enough for a country to develop quickly, however, if they use it correctly, they will get more benefits from it in the future. It is important for the country to learn how to manage it. It takes a long time to change the condition. With the development of health system in Africa, people will live in a good life, and the whole economy will become better and better.

Three Stories

The first story Steve Jobs's told us is about connecting the dots. It means to understand the relationship between different ideas or experiences. He told us his experience when he studied in the college. He dropped out the required classes because of high tuition. He didn't want to spend lots of money for something he didn't like, but he dropped in the single class he really interested in. Furthermore, he tried to save money and actually he loved it. Ten years later, he got the response. Thus he told us that we can connect the dots looking backwards. and we should trust that the dots will somehow connect in our future.
Another story he told is about love and loss. He started Apple with Woz at 20, and then he's fired at 30 because he has the different vision with others. He has disappointed for a few months. Nevertheless, he loved what he did and decided to start over. The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again. In the next five years, he got succeeded in his own company. Therefore, he wanted to teach us that sometimes life hits us in the head with a brick. Don't lose faith. The only way to do great work is to love what you do, or if you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle.
The last story is about death. He always asked himself that if today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today? He was diagnosed with cancer a year ago. Fortunately, his doctor found that his pancreatic cancer was curable with surgery, and he's fine now. Time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. The most important thing is to have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.

Kano Mental Hospital Serves Scores of Patients Per Day
http://www.voanews.com/english/Africa/2007-06-02-voa18.cfm
By Isiyaku Ahmed
Kano, Nigeria
June 02, 2007

summary:
Isiyaku Ahmed in Kano visited the psychiatric hospital and had this report. In Nigeria, the psychiatric hospital in the northern town of Kano covered all forms of mental illness. The majority of psychiatric disorders were depression, schizophrenia and drug abuse. He also introduced the treatments doctors used usually. In addition, it accommodated patients from other northern Nigerian towns and neighboring countries like: - the Republic of Niger and Chad. Finally it stated government was assisting the hospital to meet with the public demand for mental psychological care. They needed more facilities, more funding and more man-power. Nevertheless, they were trying their best and they are achieving the best.

opinion:
Though the system in the psychiatric hospital is not good enough, they do their best, so lots of their patients get good treatments. I think drug treatment is not enough for patients, because they are psychiatric disorders. They have many social problems. They need more mental psychological care. In my point of view, these doctors need more training and then they can become stronger. The government needs to support them and provide them more facilities and funding. Consequently the whole system in this hosptial will become better, and patients will get more attention and treatment.
